Details have emerged on the lavish lifestyle of NHIF corruption suspect Fredrick Sagwe Onyancha who has amassed wealth worth millions.

The economic transformation of the 39 year old in a span of just 4 years has puzzled many with the EACC closing down on him over alleged involvement in corruption practices.

Worth noting is that in just 4 years, Sagwe who serves as a receptionist on a salary of Ksh 150000 year old has bought 8 apartments worth sh 160 million.

One of his palatial homes is located Green Park estate located along Mombasa Road. The well-furnished house was at one point featured in KTN’s programme -Ideal Space, where Sagwe’s wife explained the expensive fittings in their palatial home. Investigators have valued the house and all the fittings at Sh40 million.

 

He has also bought a fleet of top of the range cars including Range Rovers and Toyota V8s that he cruises around in.

A chain of car and cleaning businesses valued at Sh 50 million is also part of his portfolio in what EACC believe could have been established from proceeds of corruption.

Sagwe held a lavish wedding at Safari Park hotel with reports indicating that organizing the lavish wedding cost sh 25 Million.

The Assets Recovery team is moving to court to repossess the house and other properties.

Appointment to the NHIF tender evaluation committee

His big break was in 2013 when he after he joined the tender evaluation committee at NHIF- a position that saw his wealth portfolio grow significantly almost overnight.

Investigators divulged that despite being a man of able means, Sagwe occasionally “tries to look like a modest man by driving a small car”.

Sagwe began his career at NHIF on a salary of 50000 in 2007 as a front desk officer after graduating from USIU.

He is being sought in the wake of a scandal at NHIF that has so far seen several arrested and arraigned in court.

 

On 23 November, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations arrested

National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) Chief Executive Officer Geoffrey Mwangi has been arrested by alongside the Head of Finance, Mr. Wilbert Kurgat.

The two were summoned to DCI headquarters located along Kiambu road and were arrested shortly afterwards.

Reports indicate that the two allegedly used their positions to try to block investigations into claims of corruption at NHIF.
