Likoni MP Mishi Mboko’s brother commits suicide in Cuba

Likoni MP Mishi Mboko’s family is in mourning.

This is following the death of her brother Dr. Ali Juma Hamisi.

Hamisi who is a medical doctor passed away on Sunday in Cuba where he had gone to pursue a Masters degree in Family medicine at the University of Medical Sciences in Havana, Cuba.

The deceased was part of an exchange program by the Ministry of health that saw 50 doctors travel to the South American country.

Makadara MP George Aladwa broke the news when sending his condolences to Mishi’s family.

The body of the deceased was found dangling in his room by his colleagues.

However, the medical board officials have claimed that the deceased committed suicide out of the frustrations the doctors in Cuba have been going through.

According to Abdi Mwache the secretary general of the Coast Branch of the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board, the situation of the doctors in Cuba is a sharp contrast to that which the Ministry of Health painted during the beginning of the program.

“Cuba has an embargo with the US and hence it’s difficult for relatives to wire money to their relatives who are suffering back in Cuba,” Mwache said.

This comes just less than two months after the doctors in Cuba accused the government of neglect.

Some of the doctors complained that the cost of living in Cuba was relatively high in comparison to the Sh 36,000 stipend the government was giving them.

Medics studying abroad are entitled to a stipend of sh 144,000 however the ministry had argued that since the doctors would be getting food and accommodation, they would be entitled to a stipend of sh 36,000.

Following the complaints, the Kenyan embassy in Cuba is said to have later summoned the doctors announced an increase of the stipend from sh 36,000 to sh. 110,000.

KMPDU has now demanded the recalling of the Doctors who are part of the program saying that they should be granted credit transfers to complete their studies in Kenyan universities.
